About Zeb and the state of Nevada.
Zebedee "Zeb" Kendall (1875-1954) was a founding father of Goldfield, Nevada and a renowned promoter around Tonopah.
His brother was the first murder victim in Goldfield (over a mining claim).
Zeb also promoted Rawhide (Nevada). Kendall came to Tonopah in 1900 with in his pocket and in 90 days made a fortune from the proceeds of a lease from Jim Butler, the original discoverer of the camp.
At the time of the Tonopah find he secured a lease on the Mizpah Mine and took out ,000.
He was one of the associates of January Jones in the January-lease and with the money he has made is helped to build up the state of Nevada.
He went on to become a prominent mine owner and promoter and participated in all the early 20th century mining booms in central Nevada.
In 1920 he acquired control of the old Big Bonanza Consolidated Virginia mine in Virginia City, and remained its president until his death in 1954.
A notorious gambler, he lost a number of small fortunes. In the 1930's, he bought up much of the Comstock tailings and, with a superior milling process, proceeded to make yet another fortune.
He served as a Nevada State Senator representative of Nye County in the Senate of the Nevada Legislature from 1909 through 1916 and during his tenure served as Chairman of the committees on Mines and Mining, Agriculture, Counties and County Boundaries, Railroads, Internal Improvements and Manufactures, and Rules and Joint Rules; and Whereas, Senator Kendall introduced and helped secure the passage of important legislation pertaining to mining claims and regulations, telephone-telegraph franchises and requiring public water companies to supply water for fire protection.
The Zeb Kendall House in Tonopah Nevada is on the National Register of Historic Places.
