A rare certificate signed by J(ames) W(y
lie) Mandeville (1824-1876) as President. Mandeville was a New York native and school teacher who came to San Jose CA in 1849. In 1850, he left teaching to enter the mining industry in Tuolomne County. The 1850 Census listed the 27 year old in Township 5 as a miner. He served in the State Assembly from 1853-1854 and the State Senate in 1855-1857.
He became a U.S. Surveyor from 1857-1861, and was State Commissioner of Immigration and State Controller in 1875. His tombstone in Sacramento City Cemetery bears the title "Controller of State

A beautiful certificate with a Britton & Rey vignette lithograph of a mining scene. Condition very good with irregular trim of lower edge with reverse script loss.
