Unique vignette of early mining camp on Fryer Hill, Leadville, Colorado
The Bald Mountain Mining Company owned and operated mines in Leadville, Colorado (Lake County) on Fryer Hill, on the northeast side of Leadville. The company mines on Fryer Hill included the Hercules Mine and Hazard Mine; the mines produced silver, gold, and lead ores. The company also owned mines in Park and Gunnison Counties, Colorado. The company’s first president was Col. J. E. Peyton, and its mine manager and engineer was General Horatio B. Bearce. The 1879 prospectus of the company includes statements (endorsements) by David H. Moffat (an important figure in Colorado mining history), Col. J. E. Peyton (an important Civil War Confederate officer, and the company’s first president), and General Horatio B. Bearce (the company’s mining engineer, and a Civil War General and important political figure in Denver, who was murdered in 1884 [at age 52] in Leadville by Samuel W. Derry [another mine owner] during a dispute over their mining claims).
