Attractive vignette of hydraulic mining operation
The San Domingo Gold Mining Company owned hydraulic placer gold mining operations at Murphys, California (Calaveras County) near the former mining camp of Altaville. The company acquired a large group of gravel mining claims and built a 15-mile canal to supply three hydraulic mines, using high-pressure hoses and jets to wash river gravel down hillsides and through sluice boxes to recover gold.
