assachusetts and New Mexico Consolidated Mining Company mines were located at Silver City, New Mexico (Grant County) within the Silver City Mining District (also called Silver Flat district). Silver City was founded in 1870 after prospectors discovered rich lodes of silver in the nearby mountains. The Santa Fe Railroad reached Silver City in 1886, and the Silver City, Pinos Altos and Mogollon Railroad was incorporated in 1889 to build a railway north to the mining town of Mogollon (Catron County).
According to the information taken from the company's 1883 annual report: “The property of the company consists of the Legal Tender ledge, which adjoins Silver City and is the original discovery which lead to the settlement of Silver Flat Mining District. The amount of ore in sight in the various shafts and drifts is estimated at 2,000 to 3,000 tons. Already there has been expended upon the property over ,000 foot timber shafts, drifts etc. 216 tons of ore were sent to another company's mill and returned 24,229 ounces of silver, value about ,000, being the average of 4 per ton. This ore was transported by ox teams for which per ton was paid, in addition to per ton for milling.

n 1881, the Plymouth Rock Mining Company merged with the Massachusetts and New Mexico Consolidated Mining Company (retaining that name). The Plymouth Rock Mining Company’s primary mining property was also located in the Silver City Mining District west of Silver City, New Mexico.
Silver City was not unlike many other western mining towns with many saloons and frequent acts of violence. The town's violent crime rate was substantial during the 1870s, however, Grant County Sheriff Harvey Whitehall was elected in 1874, and gained a sizable reputation for his abilities at controlling trouble. In 1875, Whitehill became the first lawman to arrest Billy the Kid, known at the time under the alias of Henry Antrim. Whitehill arrested him twice, both times for theft in Silver City The town hired its first town marshal, “Dangerous Dan” Tucker, who had been working as a deputy for Whitehill since 1875. Butch Cassidy and his Wild Bunch were also reported to frequent the Silver City saloons in the late 1800s
