. Hand signed by company president and secretary. Certificate is about 4” x 9”. Black print on pale yellow vellum paper.

The Hale & Norcross Mining Company was one of the most profitable mining ventures in Nevada history. The company was formed in 1859 with a stake in the original Comstock Lode at Virginia City, Nevada (Storey County), owning the mining claims between the Savage and Chollar Mines. Originally, the claims were not thought to be productive, however, local miners John Mackay and James Fair were convinced the mine would be profitable, and together with investors James Flood and William O’Brien they purchased the property in 1868. These four partners would eventually become very wealthy, and were called the ‘Big Four Bonanza Kings,’ and the their mines would be named the ‘Big Bonanza,’ one of the riches ore bodies in history.
