The Elk Horn Coal Corporation was a large consolidation of mining properties and mining companies for their mining operations in eastern Kentucky (Letcher County, Pike County and Johnson County) and West Virginia. Elk Horn Coal Corporation was formed in 1915 with the merger of Elk Horn Fuel and Elk Horn Mining Companies – at the time of this merger there were already 18 mines in operation – seven in the Wayland Division, seven in the Fleming Division, and 4 in the Wheelwright Division. Elk Horn Coal built the mining company towns of Garrett and Wayland (in Floyd County, Kentucky), which became large mining centers until the last mines closed in the early 1950s.
