The goldfields of Nevada helped spawn the development of hydroelectric power into Southern California. In January 1905, the Nevada Power Mining and Milling Company (which became the Southern Sierras Power Company in 1911) began building a transmission line that would bring power from hydroelectric plants on Bishop Creek to the mining districts of Tonopah and Goldfield Nevada.
A 113-mile transmission line was completed across rugged mountains and barren desert in just nine months.
Bishop Creek had additional hydroelectric capacity, and in 1911, the Southern Sierras Power Company began building a transmission line southward to San Bernardino.
The 238-mile transmission line composed of more than 2,000 steel towers was completed in 1912. Considered an engineering marvel of its time, the line was energized at a record-breaking 89,000 volts, and it was later increased to 115,000 volts. Portions of the patrol and supply road built along the line were later purchased by the Federal government and eventually became U.S. Hwy. 395.
The Southern Sierra Power Company became California Electric Power Company (Calelectric) in 1941. Calelectric was the mainstay electric utility in Eastern California and the Inland Empire until it was purchased by the Southern California Edison Company in 1964.
