The Bertha and Edith Mine was on the east side of the Byrd Creek located in the James River Basin, in Goochland County, Virginia three miles northeast of Columbia. Prior to the Civil War, placer gravels were worked along the Maple and Camp tributaries of Byrd Creek, yielding a large quantity of gold. In 1877, the Bertha and Edith Gold Mining Company bought the mineral rights and began development work opening the Oak Hill and Maple Branch quartz veins. Some time later, a 20-stamp mill was erected to crush the rock and recover the ore. Historically the site has been part of the Virginia Gold Pyrite Belt Mining District that was first discovered before 1861. The ore mined is composed of pyrite and gold with waste material consisting primarily of quartz, limonite and magnetite. The host rock in this area is gneiss. The Piedmont Upland of the Appalachian Highlands characterize the geomorphology of the surrounding area.
John Elmer Mulford (1829 – 1908) was a prominent railroad executive and manufacturer from Tioga County, New York. Mulford was also a Brigadier General in the Union Army during the Civil War who fought in several important battles.
