    Description

UNIQUE AND CERTAINLY ONE-OF-A-KINDS!  Offered here are three modest, but probably not at the time, as the 1999 dollar wa 33 times the 2021 dollar, paychecks paid to men who had risked life and limb down in the copper mine shafts of Baltic Mining Company 121 years ago. On each reverse you have the name, in his own hand, of the actual MINER,
    CHRIS BERRGBACCHN
    ,
    JOHN BARRY and JOE BELFORT,
something lost forever on each piece of, much collected, Coal Mining Tokens. Each has printed in yellow ink there on a 2 cent documentary revenue stamp collected in those days before income taxation on EVERY BANK CHECK.
These paychecks would appear to be from Baltic Mining Company’s first year of operation!
HISTORY OF THE BALTIC MINING COMPANY:
Baltic Mining Company operated an underground copper mine near South Range, Michigan consisting of 5 shafts.Exploration work begun in 1882 which resulted in the successful discovery of the Baltic Copper Lode. The adjacent property was acquired in 1897 and the Baltic Mining Company was organized a month later. The mine was acquired by Copper Range Company in 1917 and mining ceased in 1931. The #3 shaft was the deepest at 3,839 feet. The mine produced 276 million pounds of refined copper over 34 years. Fine crystals, as well as copper sulphide minerals(bornite and chalcocite) can still be found on the tailings piles today.
